Instant Pot — what is it?

If you don't know what kitchen appliance we're talking about, then this information is for you.

Instant Pot is a multifunctional kitchen appliance that combines the functions of a pressure cooker, multicooker, steamer, yogurt maker, rice cooker, slow cooker, and sometimes an air fryer or deep fryer, which cooks food quickly and conveniently thanks to pressure cooking technology. It saves time and space by combining up to 10 appliances in one unit, with electronic controls and preset programs.

Main functions:

  • Pressure Cooker: Cooks faster using high pressure and steam, tenderizing tough meat and reducing the cooking time for soups and stews.
  • Slow Cooker: Allows you to cook dishes for a long time, imitating traditional stewing.
  • Steamer: Steams vegetables and fish.
  • Rice Cooker: Perfectly cooks rice.
  • Yoghurt Maker: Maintains the temperature for yoghurt fermentation.
  • Sauté: Allows you to sauté ingredients directly in the bowl before main cooking, without using other utensils.
  • Warmer/Sterilizer: Keeps food warm or sterilizes bottles.

Key advantages:

  • Versatility: Replaces many appliances, saves space.
  • Speed: Cooks 2-3 times faster than traditional methods.
  • Safety: Features automatic safety systems, unlike older pressure cookers.
  • Convenience: Intuitive programs and the ability to cook almost any dish.

Ingredients

  • 1.8–2 kg whole frozen chicken
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • Ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • Any mild vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cold water

Preparation

  1. Rinse the frozen chicken with cold water and dry it with paper towels. Coat it with a small amount of oil and rub it evenly into the meat—this will help the spices stick better.
  2. Place the chicken in the Instant Pot, breast side down. Sprinkle half of the spices on one side of the chicken: salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and oregano.
  3. Carefully flip the chicken and add the remaining spices to the other side. Transfer the chicken to a large plate.
  4. Pour water into the Instant Pot and insert the steaming rack (if it has handles, it's easier). Place the chicken breast-side up, close the lid, set the valve to "Sealing," and select the Pressure Cook mode on high power:
    • For a 6-liter Instant Pot:
      • 3 kg — 50 minutes
      • 4 kg — 60 minutes
      • 5 kg — 70 minutes
    • For an 8-liter Instant Pot:
      • 4 kg — 40 minutes
      • 5 kg — 50 minutes
      • 6 kg — 60 minutes
  5. After the ready signal, leave the chicken in the pot for natural pressure release: 6 liters — 15–20 minutes, 8 liters — about 40 minutes. Do not use Quick Release.
  6. Open the lid and enjoy the juicy, flavorful chicken. You can serve it whole, cut it up for lunch, or freeze it for later. The broth that forms is perfect for soup.
